Northlake Mall’s impressive transformation aids local businesses

"Transformation Northlake"

The Northlake Mall in Charlotte, North Carolina is undergoing an impressive transformation despite its financial struggles and crime issues. Local leaders are focusing on various initiatives to make the shopping center a safe, thriving place for local businesses.

Part of this transformation includes opening its doors to Black business owners, causing a significant positive change in the mall’s atmosphere. One such co-owner is Danyell Butler. Formerly homeless, Butler is now the successful owner of Modified Kicks, a trending and exclusive footwear store. Butler’s inspirational journey provides a powerful testament to business success against all odds and encourages a supportive and more welcoming atmosphere within the mall.

Despite the rise of e-commerce and the Covid-19 pandemic hitting hard on physical retail outlets, there is a renewed interest in brick-and-mortar establishments among small businesses across the U.S. Today, 19 Black-owned businesses occupy Northlake Mall. That’s 17% of all businesses within the mall.

Northlake Mall: fostering local enterprise growth

Initiatives have been put in place to provide resources and support to these businesses, which has led to a significant increase in foot traffic and a healthy surge in sales.

LaToya Evans, a local entrepreneur and owner of Charlotte’s Nails, credits the decrease in crime at the mall to the increased presence of local, Black-owned businesses. She asserts this societal shift is turning the mall into a significant launchpad for individuals seeking to build generational wealth. Evans’ supportive perspective points to the potential of the mall serving as an important stepping stone for economic equality and widespread community growth.

In response to earlier crime issues, the mall has taken steps to improve security. Measures such as increased police presence, surveillance equipment, gun-detecting dogs, and emergency preparedness training for staff are being implemented. This active pursuit towards a safer and secure experience promotes a shared responsibility for safety among staffers and shoppers alike.

In its pursuit of transformation, Northlake Mall encapsulates a shining example of local community rejuvenation and business resilience. With further city participation and support, these steps towards inclusivity and local empowerment can undoubtedly lead to brighter hope for the mall and its surrounding community.
