Homeland Security Calls on Verizon to Unify its IP Network

Verizon landed a $678.5 million contract with the Department of Homeland SecurityMay 14 to deploy and manage a secure global IP network. The dealrequires Verizon to combine the multiple separate wide area networks ofthe DHS’ 22 agencies into one common IP network.

Over the life of the 10-year agreement, Verizon will also implementa security operations center for DHS’ more than 5,000 global sites. Inaddition, Verizon will employ Emergency Communications Services, a newservice available under the Networx Universal system to help agenciesprepare for emergency responses to man-made and natural disasters.

"The Department of Homeland Security has entrusted Verizon Businessto support its critical mission of protecting our country and itscitizens," John Killian, president of Verizon Business, said in astatement.  "The advanced network that we deploy will serve as thevital springboard for the department’s evolving requirements goingforward."
