Strapsicle: New e-reader strap enhances reading safety

"Reading Safety Strap"

In June 2022, a eureka moment struck first-time mom and book-lover, Lou Rice. She accidentally dropped her e-reader on her infant son during a feeding session and knew she needed to find a solution that would allow her to multitask safely.

This moment sparked the inception of Strapsicle. Created by Rice and her partner, Ben Stainlay, it’s a unique silicone strap that holds e-readers securely. Its purpose is to offer convenience and peace of mind to busy individuals, particularly new parents.

Silicone was chosen for Strapsicle due to its durability, flexibility, and resistance to slipping. This comfortable strap ensures e-readers are held securely. Hence, users can engage in their online browsing or reading sessions without worrying about dropping their devices.

This invention is far from modest.

Rice and Stainlay’s creation has earned recognition as an essential reading aid and has ramped up over $660,000 in revenue. Rice herself admits that after using the strap, her reading experiences became considerably more comfortable to the point that reading without it seemed less enjoyable.

Two prototypes of Strapsicle were created before the final design was finalized. The additional time provided by lockdown restrictions was invaluable in refining the concept. Each crafted model was a stepping stone that helped improve the design, transforming their invention into a profitable business.

Strapsicle gained significant popularity, leading Rice to quit her corporate job in February. The venture is projected to reach a staggering $1.3 million soon, thanks to endorsements from online influencers and a successful Amazon launch.

Furthermore, Strapsicle has turned a new leaf for patients struggling with motor control difficulties due to conditions like Parkinson’s disease, carpal tunnel syndrome, and rheumatoid arthritis. The innovative design allows the secure strapping of the book, which reduces stress on the hands and fingers.

Strapsicle is thus not just a tool for reading but acts as an instrument of empowerment for those who thought they might never comfortably read a book again.

In recognition of the product’s innovative design and practical usefulness, Strapsicle won the prestigious “Best New Product” at the New Zealand Gift Fair earlier this year. This victory underlines its excellence in marrying innovation with practicality, distinguishing it from competitors.
