8 ways to start genuinely believing in yourself (even if it isn’t in your nature)

Often, the toughest critic we face is the one staring back at us in the mirror.

Self-doubt can be paralyzing, preventing us from harnessing our full potential and stunting our personal growth.

However, believing in yourself isn’t a trait some people are just born with. It’s a mindset that can be cultivated and nurtured, even if it feels foreign or uncomfortable.

When you choose self-belief, you’re choosing empowerment over the cycle of self-sabotage.

That’s right, you choose to recognize your worth and see challenges as opportunities to grow. You choose to accept the truth that your value isn’t defined by outside opinions or circumstances.

If you’re ready to break free from self-doubt, here are eight strategies to help you build real confidence and start believing in yourself—even if it doesn’t come naturally to you.

1) Embrace authenticity

In a world that often encourages conformity, it can be challenging to stay true to oneself. Yet, the first step towards genuine self-belief begins with embracing your authenticity.

Authenticity involves:

  • Being honest with yourself
  • Acknowledging your strengths and weaknesses
  • Staying true to your core values

In essence, it’s about accepting your unique quirks and traits, and not trying to fit into someone else’s mold.

Consider this as your foundation for self-belief. When you know who you are, what you stand for, and where your strengths lie, it empowers you.

This self-knowledge can bolster your confidence, helping you navigate life decisions and challenges with more assurance.

However, nurturing authenticity isn’t always easy. It may require introspection and the courage to confront parts of yourself that you’d rather ignore or wish were different.

But remember, it’s in these moments of self-awareness and acceptance that real growth happens.

2) Cultivate resilience

Life is filled with ups and downs. There will inevitably be times when you stumble, fail, and face obstacles.

I’ve certainly had my fair share of setbacks. Rather than perceiving these experiences as failures, I’ve come to see them as opportunities for growth and learning.

This approach is about fostering resilience, the ability to bounce back from adversity and keep going despite difficulties. It’s about adopting a growth mindset that views challenges as stepping stones, not roadblocks.

Resilience is key to believing in yourself because it reinforces the idea that you can handle whatever comes your way. And the more you face challenges and overcome them, the more your self-belief grows.

As author Elizabeth Edwards once said, “Resilience is accepting your new reality, even if it’s less good than the one you had before. You can fight it, you can do nothing but scream about what you’ve lost, or you can accept that and try to put together something that’s good.”

3) Challenge limiting beliefs

We all carry around a set of beliefs about ourselves that act as lenses through which we see the world.

Unfortunately, some of these beliefs can be limiting, telling us we’re not good enough, smart enough, or talented enough to achieve our dreams.

But here’s the good news: these beliefs are not fixed. They can be challenged and changed. In fact, one powerful way to start believing in yourself is to actively confront these limiting beliefs.

In my video on redefining success on personal terms and breaking free from societal expectations, I delve further into this topic.

I discuss the importance of recognizing and challenging our internal narratives that can hold us back from living authentically and reaching our full potential.

Remember, your beliefs about yourself are not an unchangeable reality. They are simply thoughts you’ve practiced thinking over time.

By consciously choosing to challenge these thoughts, you can start to shift your self-perception and open up new possibilities for growth and self-belief.

4) Embrace your creative potential

We often limit our self-belief by subscribing to the notion that creativity is a special gift bestowed upon a select few.

We look at successful artists, innovators, or entrepreneurs and tell ourselves, “I could never do that.” This pervasive myth can stifle our growth and potential.

The truth is, creativity is not exclusive. It’s an inherent part of our humanity. We all have a wellspring of creativity within us, waiting to be tapped into. You just have to:

  • See the possibilities
  • Make the connections
  • Find new ways to approach challenges

To do so, we must take responsibility for our lives and our potential. We must face the fear of failure and the uncertainty of stepping into the unknown.

Yet, it’s in embracing this discomfort that we can start to truly believe in ourselves. When we recognize our own creative potential and start to nurture it, we not only unlock new opportunities and solutions but also build a deeper sense of self-worth and empowerment.

5) Practice financial alignment

Money is often a source of stress and self-doubt.

We’re taught to measure our worth by the size of our bank accounts or the prestige of our job titles. But this perspective can lead to a constant chase for more, leaving us feeling never quite good enough.

But what if we could shift this narrative?

What if, instead of viewing prosperity as merely accumulating wealth, we saw it as a reflection of our deepest values and intentions?

This might seem like a radical concept, but it’s a crucial step towards genuinely believing in ourselves.

It’s about recognizing that our financial decisions are not just about making ends meet or building wealth, but also about expressing who we are and what we believe in.

In my video on personal freedom hacks, I delve into the importance of redefining success on personal terms and how it has significantly improved my life.

By aligning our financial choices with our values, we can start to see our prosperity as a sign of our authenticity and integrity.

This shift can foster a greater sense of self-belief and empowerment, demonstrating that we have the ability to shape our lives in ways that are meaningful and fulfilling to us.

6) Seek supportive communities

In the journey towards self-belief, there’s a common misconception that it’s a solitary pursuit.

We’re often told that we need to become self-reliant, to “pull ourselves up by our bootstraps,” and find strength within ourselves.

While personal responsibility and inner strength are indeed important, this doesn’t mean we have to go it alone.

Contrary to the myth of the lone wolf, seeking supportive communities and cultivating authentic relationships can significantly bolster our self-belief.

It’s in these connections with others that we find validation, encouragement, and different perspectives. They can:

  • Challenge us
  • Support us in times of struggle
  • Celebrate with us in times of success

So, don’t shy away from seeking support and connection. Reach out to others. Build your tribe. None of us can thrive alone.

7) View obstacles as opportunities

When faced with challenges or setbacks, it’s easy to doubt ourselves. We may feel incompetent, inadequate, or overwhelmed.

But what if we could shift our perspective and see these obstacles not as roadblocks, but as opportunities for growth and learning?

This might seem difficult, especially in the midst of hardship. However, embracing this mindset can be a powerful tool for building self-belief.

When we view obstacles as opportunities, we empower ourselves to learn, adapt, and evolve. We start to see that failure isn’t a reflection of our worth, but simply feedback on our approach.

This shift in perspective can build resilience, foster creativity, and most importantly, strengthen our belief in our ability to navigate life’s ups and downs.

8) Live in alignment with your values

In a world where we’re often pressured to conform, it can be challenging to stay true to who we are and what we believe in. Yet, living in alignment with our values is a powerful way to cultivate self-belief.

When we make choices that reflect our deepest values and desires, we affirm our worth and autonomy.

We send ourselves the message that what we believe in matters and that we have the power to shape our lives in ways that honor these beliefs.

Sure, there will be challenges and even moments of self-doubt. But it’s in these moments that we can return to our values for guidance and reassurance.

Turning self-doubt into self-belief: A journey of transformation

Building self-belief isn’t an overnight transformation—it’s a process, one small step at a time. By implementing these strategies, you’re choosing to break free from the grip of self-doubt and embrace the power within you.

As you implement these strategies and continue on your path towards self-belief, remember this: You are more capable than you know.

Each challenge you face is an invitation to grow. Each decision you make is an opportunity to align with your deepest values. And every moment of self-doubt is a chance to transform it into self-belief.

As you continue to nurture this mindset, you’ll find yourself not just believing in your potential, but living it out every day.
