Life has a way of throwing curveballs when we least expect it.
One minute, everything feels like it’s falling into place, and the next, you’re caught in a storm, wondering if you’ll ever find your way out.
It’s during these moments, when everything feels overwhelming, that I’ve been struck by the way some people manage to stay grounded, even when life feels like it’s crumbling around them.
They don’t just survive—they seem to carry a quiet strength that gets them through, no matter what.
And the more I observe, the more I realize it’s not luck or magic; it’s the small, consistent things they do.
In this article, I want to share the eight key behaviors I’ve noticed in those who manage to stay strong, no matter how tough things get.
1) Acceptance is the key to resilience
We often find ourselves fighting against the currents of life, resisting realities we don’t like, and wishing things were different.
But those who remain composed in the face of adversity understand the power of acceptance.
Acceptance doesn’t mean resigning to a fate or giving up on change.
Instead, it’s an acknowledgment of the present moment, the current reality, no matter how uncomfortable it may be.
It’s about recognizing that whatever is happening right now, it’s part of your journey and has a role to play in your personal growth.
Fighting against reality only creates stress and suffering.
When I learned to accept and embrace my circumstances, I found that I could respond more effectively to them.
Instead of wasting energy on resistance, I could use that energy to navigate through my challenges and seek solutions.
Start embracing acceptance.
Recognize that every experience, every challenge, is part of your journey.
This acceptance will become your anchor during turbulent times and empower you with resilience and composure.

2) Embracing the power of self-awareness
Self-awareness is not just about understanding your emotions, strengths, and weaknesses.
It’s also about recognizing your patterns of thought and behavior, and how they affect your interactions with the world around you.
Those who stand strong in the face of life’s storms have a deep sense of self-awareness.
In my journey, I’ve found that cultivating self-awareness is an ongoing process.
It’s not always comfortable to confront our fears and limiting beliefs, but it’s a necessary step towards growth and resilience.
Being aware of my own thoughts and actions has allowed me to recognize when I’m acting out of fear or falling into old, unproductive patterns.
It’s given me the tools to make conscious choices towards my goals, rather than being swayed by my fears or insecurities.
As Carl Jung once said, “Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.” Embrace the power of self-awareness.
Make the unconscious conscious.
It is your key to staying strong and composed amidst life’s challenges.
3) Breaking free from societal conditioning
One of the most potent sources of strength and composure comes from understanding and embracing our true selves.
This often means breaking free from societal conditioning and transcending limiting beliefs that hold us back.
In my work with The Vessel, I had the privilege to produce a masterclass with shaman Rudá Iandê, titled “Free Your Mind”.
This masterclass is designed to guide you through the process of reclaiming your authenticity and freedom through exercises that dismantle common spiritual myths and pitfalls.
A significant part of this journey involves developing your personal cosmovision, which allows you to align your thoughts and actions with your personal values, leading to improved mental clarity and emotional resilience.
This alignment is pivotal in maintaining strength and composure during life’s challenges.

4) Embracing our true nature
It’s easy to get lost in the roles we play and the masks we wear.
We try to fit into societal expectations, forgetting who we truly are.
Those who can remain strong and composed amidst life’s challenges are often the ones who have the courage to embrace their true nature.
Raw and honest self-exploration can be uncomfortable.
It involves peeling back layers of conditioning and confronting aspects of ourselves that we may prefer to ignore.
Research shows that greater authenticity—living in alignment with one’s true self—leads to improved psychological well-being, self-esteem, and resilience, helping individuals better navigate life’s pressures.
When we embrace our true nature, we ground ourselves in authenticity.
We stop being swayed by external pressures and start making decisions aligned with our core values.
This alignment provides us with a deep sense of peace and resilience, helping us maintain our composure no matter what life throws at us.
As you continue on your journey towards strength and composure, I invite you to reflect on this: Are you living in alignment with your true nature or are you still wearing masks to fit into societal expectations?
5) Cultivating deep connections
We often think of strength and resilience as solitary traits, something we develop and nurture within ourselves.
However, the reality is that our connections with others play a crucial role in our ability to remain strong and composed.
In my experience, genuine relationships and supportive communities provide an invaluable source of strength.
The encouragement, understanding, and shared experiences that come from these connections are powerful antidotes to the struggles we face in life.
Embracing the importance of community doesn’t mean abandoning personal responsibility or independence.
On the contrary, it’s about recognizing that we are social beings, designed for connection and collaboration.
By nurturing authentic relationships and fostering a sense of belonging in supportive communities, we can draw strength from others during challenging times.
This sense of connection not only fuels our emotional resilience but also provides us with different perspectives to help us navigate life’s challenges effectively.
Strength does not exist in isolation.
It’s intimately connected with our relationships and communities.
The courage to connect deeply with others is a critical component of resilience and composure.
6) Seeing the creative potential in obstacles
When we encounter obstacles, it’s natural to view them as setbacks, as impediments to our progress.
However, those who remain composed in the face of adversity see obstacles differently – they see them as opportunities for growth and learning.
Embracing this perspective requires a shift in mindset.
It’s about reframing failure as feedback and viewing every challenge as a chance to adapt, evolve, and unleash our creative potential.
Research shows that cultivating a growth mindset—where setbacks are seen as learning opportunities rather than failures—not only enhances problem-solving skills but also fosters creativity and innovation in the face of adversity.
In my journey, I’ve learned that obstacles often push us out of our comfort zones.
They force us to think creatively, to innovate, and to find solutions we wouldn’t have considered otherwise.
This process not only strengthens our problem-solving skills but also enhances our resilience.
As you navigate life’s challenges, remember this: Every obstacle carries within it the seeds of creative possibility.
Embrace them.
They are your stepping stones towards strength and composure.
7) Taking full responsibility for our lives
One common trap many of us fall into is blaming external circumstances or other people for our problems.
It’s an easy way out, but it robs us of our power and hinders our ability to remain composed when life throws curveballs at us.
Taking full responsibility for our lives is empowering.
It involves focusing on what we can control—our attitudes, actions, and responses.
This shift in focus allows us to respond effectively to life’s challenges without losing our composure.
In my experience, taking responsibility has been a crucial step towards personal freedom and resilience.
It has allowed me to steer my life in the direction I want instead of being buffeted by external circumstances.
Your ability to remain strong and composed relies heavily on taking full ownership of your life. Embrace responsibility—it’s the key to personal empowerment.
8) Aligning financial decisions with deepest values
Prosperity is more than just accumulating wealth.
For those who remain strong and composed no matter what life throws at them, prosperity is about aligning financial decisions with their deepest values and using money as a tool for positive change.
It’s easy to view financial choices as personal decisions without broader impact.
But every financial choice we make is a vote for the kind of world we want to live in.
Studies show that socially responsible investing (SRI) and integrating environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors into financial decisions can contribute to long-term returns while also promoting societal good, making it a powerful tool for creating positive change.
By directing resources toward businesses and initiatives that promote social good, we contribute to a more just and sustainable future.
In my journey, I’ve learned that making financial choices aligned with my values not only contributes to my sense of purpose and ethical participation in the economy but also strengthens my resilience in the face of life’s challenges.
As you navigate your journey, remember this: Your financial decisions are powerful tools for change.
Use them wisely.
Align them with your values.
They are a crucial component of your strength and composure in life’s turbulent times.
