A list of the top 10 federal information technology spenders includes the armed forces, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Treasury Department.
The list, put together by research and consulting firm Input, is based on its analysis of addressable federal I.T. spending, which is basically an information technology budget minus I.T. personnel costs. The 10 “high rollers,” as Input calls them, account for about two-thirds of the government’s spending on I.T.
Here are the top 10, in order of their 2007 addressable I.T. spending:
1. Office of the Secretary of Defense: $7 billion
2. Department of the Army: $6.2 billion
3. Department of the Air Force: $5.8 billion
4. Department of Homeland Security: $4.5 billion
5. Department of the Navy: $4.5 billion
6. Department of Treasury: $2. 4 billion
7. Department of Justice: $2.3 billion
8. Department of Transportation: $2.2 billion
9. Department of Health and Human Services: $2.1 billion
10. Department of Energy: $1.8 billion
According to Input, many of the 10 departments are focusing on infrastructure and infrastructure consolidation as well as information-sharing projects.
