Walpack Inn’s 75-year run arriving at finale

"Arriving Finale"

The well-known Walpack Inn located in Sussex County, New Jersey, is set to be sold after a grand 75-year operation run by a dedicated family. As the family prepares for retirement, they express their gratitude for their loyal customers and staff, and their hope for a worthy successor to carry on their legacy.

Lara Darco, the property manager, is orchestrating the sale, although no official listing has been made. The timeline for the sale remains flexible, but it’s expected the property will be listed soon. The current owners aim to keep the restaurant going until its final sale.

The decision to sell the inn wasn’t made lightly, but the family is looking forward to seeing another set of hands breathe new life into the place. James Heigis, whose parents were the original owners, might find the transition particularly poignant, given his longstanding relationship with the property.

End of an era for Walpack Inn

His departure could ripple through the tightly-knit community.

Celebrated for its beautiful views of Kittatinny Mountain Ridge, the Walpack Inn has served the local community and visitors for seven successful decades. The Inn exists in a sparse municipality, currently home to only nine residents, a distinct drop from its 1970 population of 384 people.

From its 14-ounce prime rib dinner specials and a comforting selection of desserts to its warm ambiance and hospitable staff, the Inn’s reputation for outstanding food and service is well-deserved. It extends beyond merely a place to eat but provides a relaxing retreat to its patrons. Adding to its appeal, there is a special Sunday brunch which is revered by the locals.

The Inn also serves as a living testament to the history of the region. From its rustic interiors to its candle-lit hallways, it echoes tales from a time long gone, while welcoming guests into a comforting, rustic environment. As Darco puts it, it truly is a living time capsule, poised for another handover in its rich timeline.
