The UWM Police Department and Hyundai Motor America are joining forces to combat the rising car theft problem in Milwaukee. They will host a free antitheft software upgrade event from September 5-7 at UWM’s Capitol & Humboldt UPark Lot. The event is open to all area residents who own or lease a 2011-2021 Hyundai vehicle with a mechanical turn-to-start key ignition.
No registration or appointment is needed. The software upgrade is designed to protect against theft modes that have become popular on social media. Dave VandeLinde, vice president of Hyundai Motor America, showed how the upgrade process works at a news conference on Wednesday.
Hyundai and UWM to combat theft
He said the upgrade is an effective way to stop thieves from stealing these cars. All Hyundai owners who attend the event will also get a free steering wheel lock.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says the software solution is an effective theft deterrent. In addition to the software upgrade event, Hyundai is sponsoring the 8th Annual School Supply Drive organized by the UWM African Diaspora Council. People who drop off school supplies from September 5-7 at UWM’s Merrill Circle Surface Lot will receive a free steering wheel lock.
The event runs from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. Eligible Hyundai drivers are strongly encouraged to take advantage of this free opportunity to reduce the risk of their vehicle being stolen.
