An innocent family outing turned sour when renowned photographer Pervez Taufiq and his family were subjected to racial abuse mid-flight on a United Airlines shuttle. The incident, which started with aggressive questioning of his 11-year-old son, escalated into a vitriolic attack that left the family feeling isolated and helpless. Despite the ordeal, what shocked Taufiq most was the silence from fellow passengers.
The incident started when Taufiq, traveling with his wife and three children from Mexico to Los Angeles, gave their one free business upgrade to their 11-year-old son. The father was seated three rows behind his upgraded son when he first encountered the woman who would later become their tormentor.
@sijeros An unhinged woman was caught on camera spewing vile racist remarks at a man and his family aboard a United Airlines shuttle bus. The man, Taufiq, stated that the woman initially began making racist comments toward his son during their flight. The situation escalated on the shuttle when she told his children to “shut up.” Taufiq later shared with his followers that police were pursuing her arrest and confirmed that she had been placed on a “no-fly list.” #usa🇺🇸 #unitedstates #berlin #women #bus #men #plane ♬ Inspirational – neozilla
Taufiq described his initial interaction with the woman as she returned from the bathroom, requesting access to her seat. Although she muttered under her breath as he moved aside, he thought nothing more of it at the time.
The situation took a turn for the worse after they had landed and were being ushered to the shuttle. Taufiq’s son revealed that the woman had asked him uncomfortable questions during the flight, such as if he was Indian and where in India he was from.
Once they were on the shuttle, Taufiq said the woman continued her tirade. His children’s innocent excitement about a plane triggered her to tell them to ‘shut up.’ She also launched a racist attack towards Taufiq himself, making derogatory comments about his Indian heritage.
Taufiq expressed his disappointment that most of the other passengers chose to remain silent during the incident. Only one person spoke up in their defense. This silence felt like an added insult to the family who are frequent travelers and have never faced such hostility before.
A United employee eventually boarded the shuttle and began speaking with the woman, while other riders called for her removal. However, United has not provided any information about what happened to her afterward. Instead, they suggested that Taufiq file a complaint with the FBI as part of the incident occurred mid-flight.
Taufiq is now considering filing something with the FBI, given that part of the incident started in the air which falls under their jurisdiction.
This incident also raises questions about how airlines handle such situations. In this case, United Airlines suggested that the family take up the matter with the FBI since part of the incident occurred mid-flight. However, it is worth questioning whether airlines should have more concrete protocols in place to address such incidents promptly and effectively, to ensure the safety and comfort of all passengers.
