China Telecom showcases advanced fibre system

China Telecom, in collaboration with ZTE Corporation, Yangtze Optical Fibre and Cable Joint Stock Limited Company (YOFC), and Huaxin Design Institute, has successfully demonstrated the world’s first live single-wavelength 1.2Tbit/s hollow-core fiber transmission system. The system achieved a unidirectional capacity of over 100Tbit/s and a transmission distance of 20km in a field network. The groundbreaking demonstration took place at the “All-Optical Network Technology and Application in the Intelligent Computing Era” seminar of the CCSA TC618/NGOF.

It showcased the deployment of hollow-core fiber and large-capacity transmission between China Telecom’s Hangzhou Intelligent Computing Center and Yiqiao IDC. The Hangzhou Intelligent Computing Center, a critical node in China Telecom’s intelligent computing power layout, has been equipped with 1K GPU computing power of the China Telecom Cloud. This setup aims to meet the requirements for distributed computing power with large bandwidth and low latency of optical networks.

ZTE utilized its advanced high-speed optical transport equipment, enhancing spectral efficiency, baud rate optimization, and amplification technologies.

China Telecom’s fiber technology breakthrough

This allowed the extension of 41 C-band 1.2Tbit/s wavelengths and 64 L-band 800Gbit/s wavelengths, resulting in a unidirectional transmission capacity of over 100Tbit/s and a transmission distance of 20km in the field network.

The Zhejiang Branch of China Telecom stated, “We have always maintained a leading position in the field of basic transmission networks. By undertaking this national key R&D project, we have demonstrated and verified the hollow-core fiber and 1.2Tbit/s transport system in the field network. This provides detailed engineering data and demonstration applications.”

The company representative added, “In the future, we will expand our cooperation with the industry, conducting research on a larger scope, and providing practical scenarios for the interconnection of distributed intelligent computing centers.”

This achievement marks a significant milestone in the field of optical transmission.

It showcases the potential for future technological advancements and collaborations in distributed computing and networking. China Telecom plans to expand the deployment of hollow-core optical cables and establish a platform for testing and verifying new technologies and applications tailored to intelligent computing scenarios. The goal is to drive continuous innovation and broaden the application of technological advancements in the communication industry.
