Apple’s next Mac mini to drop USB-A

Mac Mini

Apple’s upcoming Mac mini is expected to be the latest device to forego the once-familiar USB-A ports, embracing the newer USB-C standard. The transition is anticipated to be part of Apple’s continuous effort to modernize its hardware, despite the inconveniences that can arise for customers who might need to scramble for adapters. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that the redesigned Mac mini will feature Apple’s upcoming M4 chip, as well as five USB-C ports.

Other connectivity options will include an Ethernet port, an HDMI connector, and a headphone jack. This marks a significant update for the Mac mini, which has not seen a major redesign since 2010. The official announcement of the new Mac mini is anticipated to follow Apple’s event on September 9, where the company is expected to unveil the new iPhone 16.

The new Mac lineup might be introduced later in the fall.

Mac mini’s USB-C transition

The higher-end variant of the Mac mini, featuring an Apple M4 Pro chip, is expected to ship in October.

Despite the absence of USB-A ports, this model will still offer ample connectivity options. Impressively, the new Mac mini is rumored to be about the size of an Apple TV, with an internal power supply. This compact design is a notable departure from the current models, which have remained largely unchanged since 2012.

As USB-C has become the new standard across devices, many users still rely on USB-A peripherals. The transition may require the use of docks and hubs to accommodate older accessories. With the tech world moving away from USB-A ports, it wouldn’t be surprising to see future Apple products, such as the Mac Pro and Mac Studio, follow suit.

The potential design changes and feature upgrades suggest a significant evolution in the Mac mini lineup.
