Top brands such as Pinterest, Netflix and Spotify leverage Apple's iOS.

These 10 companies include a Who's Who of technology titans, a few automakers and one firm that dates back to 1889. What could this eclectic mix possibly have in common? They rank in the top 10 of the 50 "Most Innovative Companies 2013," according to a recently released report from the Boston Consulting Group. The list is dominated by the tech industry, as four of the top five companies are among IT's biggest brands. As for the significant presence of the auto industry? It's a clear statement that today's vehicles make more use of tech innovation than ever. In fact, the modern car pretty much functions as a state-of-the-art, app-loaded computer on wheels—the ultimate "mobile device," you might say. As an added bonus, the report includes an accompanying survey on innovation trends that includes input from 1,500 executives. Among the results: More executives say top management is committed to innovation (70% currently versus 60% last year); that proper infrastructure is made available (65% now compared to 55% in 2012); and sufficient budgeting and resources are being provided to make it work (59% today versus 52% last year).
