Have you ever wondered which companies pay the highest salaries for software engineers? If you guessed Google or Apple, you'd be wrong. Both of those big-time players did make the following top 10 list for software engineer compensation, which was compiled by Glassdoor, but the No.1 overall company made its name by manufacturing network products and services. The top three names in social media also appear on the list, which is dominated by today's tech titans. (There's only one non-tech company included in the list, but it happens to be the nation's dominant mega-retailer.) Glassdoor has also broken down software engineer earnings by region, and it shouldn't surprise you to learn that the highest paying metro area is San Francisco ($111,885 average annual base salary), followed by Seattle ($103,196) and San Diego ($93,993). (Of course, the cost of living in these cities is also quite high.) As an added bonus, we've included comments from software engineers and other IT employees who have worked at the companies that made the list.
