Why a Growing Number of Enterprises Embrace DevOps

DevOps has gone mainstream, enabling companies to significantly streamline software development, while fostering innovation between their IT and business teams.

DevOps has gone mainstream, and a majority of companies are now adopting this groundbreaking software-delivery practice in some form, according to a recent survey from CA Technologies. The accompanying report--"Assembling the DevOps Jigsaw: Do You Have All the Right Pieces in Place?"--states that most organizations, regardless of their industry, understand that they must become software companies to best support their core businesses. DevOps, they've concluded, allows them to significantly streamline software development, while fostering innovation between IT and business teams. As a result, these businesses are better positioned to expand into new markets and solidify customer engagement, among other benefits. "Whether it's driving continuous innovation or the lean agenda, technology is a key enabler, and this, in turn, makes software critical to success," according to the report. However, "Software development and delivery have traditionally been achieved through projects lasting months or years that step sequentially through a series of fixed phases: analysis, design, build, integration, testing and deployment. DevOps is an alternative approach enabling much more rapid and continuous delivery of value to create competitive advantage, while simultaneously allowing IT to become more responsive and efficient." More than 1,440 senior IT and business executives took part in the research, which was conducted by Freeform Dynamics.
