Digital transformation is fundamentally changing business and IT models. It is introducing new and often remarkable opportunities for innovation and disruption. However, the path to success is typically paved with more than a few obstacles. A newly released report from the Hackett Group, "The CIO Agenda: Closing the Digital Transformation Confidence Gap in 2017," provides some insight and perspective on how businesses are approaching this space, how they are dealing with the need for new strategies and competencies, and how cyber-security is affecting these initiatives. The report also examines the key issues in digital transformation, such as how organizations are addressing agility and responsiveness, the role of application platforms and architectures, and critical technologies that drive business innovation, data management and advanced analytics. Here's a look at some of the key findings, based on results gathered from 180 executives at large companies in the United States and other countries, most with annual revenue of $1 billion or greater.

Samuel Greengard writes about business and technology for Baseline, CIO Insight and other publications. His most recent book is The Internet of Things (MIT Press, 2015).
