Project: The department implemented a Teradata data warehouse and associated business intelligence tools to track areas where it could boost its collection of taxes. Prior to the data warehouse, Iowa relied on mainframes with hard-to-combine sources of data. The new system aggregates information from Iowa’s 20 systems that handle taxes, human resources and payroll, financial accounting, employer data, accounts receivable, collection, and Internal Revenue System data for individuals and businesses. Iowa can now generate a list of potential audit leads on wayward taxpayers and track cases as they are assigned and worked on by auditors.
Benefits: Better decision-making, customer service, voluntary compliance rates and fresher data, leading to an additional $10 million a year of taxes being collected.
