Marvell Semiconductor announced Feb. 20 that, along with Seagate Technology, it has developed an ultra-portable storage platform that allows users to retrieve multimedia content wirelessly from their mobile handsets.
The Seagate Digital Audio Video Experience, or DAVE, is an external storage platform designed to store, play and share digital files while delivering 10GB to 20GB of wireless storage. It also enables mobile users to store their mobile media content on one device and makes 2,500 songs and 21 hours of video available to them.

To enable users to access the content wirelessly, the DAVE storage platform integrates Marvell’s PXA310 applications processor—which features hardware video acceleration and DRM (digital rights management) security for video playback and camcorder functionality—and the 88W8686 WLAN (wireless LAN).
“DAVE lets consumers combine their audio and video files downloaded through mobile networks with entertainment and other content side-loaded from PCs or other devices while also allowing users to customize their mobile experience,” Vishwas Deshmane, director of marketing for Marvell’s Cellular Handheld Group, told eWEEK.
With DAVE, users will be able to download videos from mobile phone networks; grab music from online, mobile or PC libraries; load audio books or GPS data; and use the data while they are on the go.
The new storage platform also allows users to record, edit and annotate large video and photo files on their mobile phones and then upload them onto social networking sites such as YouTube or MySpace while also sharing the content with other mobile phones, PCs and wireless-enabled cameras.
“DAVE [assists with the] seamless access to rich multimedia content on your mobile device without sacrificing the slim form factors consumers want,” Patrick King, senior vice president and general manager of Seagate’s consumer electronics business unit, said in a company release.
The DAVE mobile storage platform is expected to be available to leading cell phone manufacturers and telco service providers in the second quarter of 2007.
