In his book “The World is Flat,” Thomas Friedman describes over investment in fiber optics and global networking leveled the playing field between the first and third worlds, leading to the rise of the offshore development and outsourcing industry. That excess capacity may soon be gone due to an ever-increasing demand for Internet services, which may in turn lead to Internet brownouts and capacity shortages by 2010, according to Nemertes Research. In a report released last week, Nemertes says Internet service provides must invest as much as $55 billion over the next three years—60 percent to 70 percent above current spending plans—to meet global capacity demands. Failure to act could stifle innovation and put the North America market at a competitive disadvantage to the rest of the world.
