2009 saw yet another record increase in ID fraud among American adults, according to Javelin Research. Small business owners and Millennials seem to have been hit hardest among all demographics.

Bright spot

The average fraud cost per consumer went down very slightly between 2008 and 2009.

Small business owners suffered from identity fraud at 1.5 times the normal rate of typical consumers.

Full name: 63% of all fraud occurrences

Physical address: 37%

Social Security Number: 32%

Existing card fraud increased from 2.53% to 2.76%, the cases are resolved faster.

Fraudulent new credit card accounts increased by 18%.

New, fraudulently-opened Internet accounts more than doubled in 2009.

E-commerce account fraud --including Amazon, eBay and PayPal--increased by 12%

Mobile phone accounts made up 29% of fraudulent new accounts opened last year.

Health insurance information is a growing category of fraud, increasing by 4%.

Social networking opened Millennials up to the highest account misuse compared to other age groups.
