MORE CONTEXT: In early 2007, the Storm Worm gang were the folks who unleashed a flurry of fake news e-mails that launched a backdoor Trojan responsible for creating one of the most successful spam botnets the Internet has ever seen. The worm got its name from the first e-mails sent with a subject line of "230 dead as storm batters Europe".

Today the worm and its resultant botnet is still kicking and still remains a thorn in researchers’ sides.

“They are very well run very well-organized—not quite the threat they used to be—but we've spent billions of dollars fighting their spam so far just from that one crew,” Jackson of Secure Works says.
