A hard-charging former wide receiver for the Penn State football team, Smith has led ChoicePoint since it was spun off from Equifax in 1997. Prior to that, he had a stint running a service that insurers used to rate the risk of new customers. Asked by CNBC in March why ChoicePoint sold information last year to identity thieves, he said, "We never realized the sophistication organized crime would go to, to be able to get potential access to the information." Smith has written a primer on protecting people from cybercrime: A Survival Guide in the Information Age.
