Key players: EMC*, Veritas, IBM, Hewlett-Packard, Computer Associates, Hitachi/Hitachi Data Systems, Legato.
Others: BMC Software, Network Appliance, StorageTek.
Market size: $4.7 billion in 2002, down by 5.8% from 2001. Computer Associates and Hitachi/HDS saw an increase in revenues; other major vendors saw a decrease.
What's happening: For companies using storage software, smoother integration of storage hardware and software products cannot come soon enough. EMC, Veritas and other vendors have pledged to help create standards to make their products work together more easily. Financially strapped vendors, though, could find themselves short on resources to develop products that meet any new standards.
