Ah, Web 2.0. The new generation of Internet technologies is helping businesses be more collaborative and communicate better with customers and investors. A number of top-flight executives write blogs, a popular Web 2.0 tool. But for one, spouting opinions
online has gained the attention of a new audience: the feds. In mid-July, the Federal Trade Commission said it was investigating the online activity of John Mackey, CEO of Whole Foods. The supermarket chief, according to the commission, had been posting anonymously on Yahoo message boards to pump up his company's outlook—and even compliment his own hairdo —while bashing the competition, The New York Times reported. While the feds look into Mackey's postings, executives should take heed: While openness is valued in today's business arena, transparency is just as crucial.
