Serious crime is down in the nation's second-largest city. A big reason for the drop: LAPD's use of an analytics system to tailor its enforcement strategies.

BASELINE GOALS:

  • Reduce violent and property crimes by 8% in 2006, from 140,601 crimes in 2005.
  • Increase the number of hidden cameras in the Skid Row area of downtown from 20 to 68.
  • Increase the number of police officers from 9,302 to 9,552.
