As virtual machine density increases within the enterprise, more organizations will need to update their servers to handle the increased loads. So say the analysts at IDC and at Gartner. We examine the numbers from both, as well as figures from a recent survey of 290 IT decision makers conducted by Shavlik Technologies at VMworld.By Ericka Chickowski
16.5% of all servers shipped in the second quarter of 2009 were virtualized, says IDC
That's a 14.5% bump over the same period in 2008

Only 16% of workloads are running in virtual machines today, says Gartner
50% of x86 architecture server workloads will run in virtual environments by 2012
That means 58 million virtually deployed machines by 2012
"By year-end 2010, enterprises with 100-999 employees will have a higher penetration of virtual machines deployed than the Global 500," says Gartner's Tom Bittman.
