Symantec recently commissioned Applied Research to survey over 1,000 North American IT professionals about their attitudes and practices regarding green IT. The findings showed significant uptick in green IT plans, strategies and spending. Symantec grouped its statistics in five findings categories:

2. Green IT Budgets Are Rising
3. IT Is Willing to Pay a Premium for Green IT
4. IT Is at the Heart of Enterprise Green Efforts
5. Green IT Initiatives More of a Priority

67% of organizations are in the discussion or trial stages for developing a green IT strategy30% have already implemented a strategy. 86% of companies said that it is important that their IT organization implement green initiatives

92 % of organizations listed reduced energy consumption as the most important reason for implementing green IT91 % listed reduced cooling costs70% listed reduced carbon emissions66% listed improved company reputation

72% of organizations plan to increase their green IT budgets over the next 12 months

Potential for good ROI: survey respondents reported spending between $14 million and $20 million a year on data center electricity

91% of companies said that a product’s energy efficiency would be an important factor in purchasing decisions over the next 12 months

64% of respondents said they would pay at least 10% more for a more energy-efficient product of equivalent functionality33% said they would be willing to pay 20% more

92% of companies feel that IT should play a very or extremely significant role in minimizing the business’ environmental footprint

81% of companies have a green advocate in charge of coordinating all green activities, most of which have an IT focus

76% of respondents reported using power management products to reduce power by data center equipment operating at low utilization rates
