The Great Recession, as some are calling it, is different in some important ways from previous economic downturns. Tom Silver, Chief Marketing Officer of Dice.com, looks at key differences for technology workers.

Technology Employment More Resilient than General Employment Peak unemployment among technology workers (6.5%) was higher than the national average (6.3%) during the last decline. Today, those numbers have reversed: national rate (8.1%), technology industry (5.4%).

More IT Jobs Are AvailableThe number of IT Job postings is 2.7 times higher now on Dice.com than at the low-point of the last recession. Opportunities exist for those pursuing a career in technology at all levels of experience .

Information Technology has become Business Technology. Seven of the top 10 paying jobs in the industry require skills aimed at providing enterprises with better real-time intelligence. Business skills like financial analysis, requirements planning and communication may be keys to long-term success.

Salaries Are Up Average technology salaries declined slightly in 2002 to $67,900. Today, the average salary is $78,035, an increase of 5% versus last year. Today many technology professionals are seen as core assets where they work.

Technological Innovators Have Grown Quickly Google had 284 employees at the end of 2001, today that number is more than 10,000.
