Part of being realistic is honestly assessing what your organization has to offer potential geeks coming into the fold. If it is a boring position, a stagnant company or a poor work environment then perhaps the draw is better compensation. Or perhaps salary is low, but the position offers a chance to work on new, exciting technology. The better a hiring manager understands the true value proposition, the more successful they'll be at “selling” recruits on a job.


Managing IT professionals is a lot easier task when the technology team is made up of talented individuals. Unfortunately, many IT managers fail to cultivate their skills around recruiting because they do it so infrequently compared to their other day-to-day management tasks.
