The Robert Half Technology IT Hiring Index and Skills Report, a survey of over 1,400 CIOs at companies with more than 100 employees, shows a slowdown in hiring plans for the second quarter of this year.But some jobs, industries, and regions still project solid growth.

Net expecting to add staff: 2%Net for first quarter: 8%

21% of those expecting to add staff plan to use both full-time and contract workers.8% expect to use only contract workers

25% of CIOs say business growth is driving demand for new staff.9% say expansion of the IT department is the driver.8% say increased workloads drives hiring demand.8% cited the need for systems upgrades.

40% of CIOs said lower IT budgets would lead to staff reductions.21% cited the impact of the financial meltdown on their company or industry.18% cited IT projects being put on hold.18% cited companywide layoffs.

Highest job-growth areas: Help desk/technical support and networking, each cited by 15% of CIOs. 10% of CIOs cited Internet/intranet development.

Most in-demand skill: Desktop support.Network administration, the most-needed skill for the previous two quarters, came in a close second.

Most optimist region: 18% of CIOs in the Mountain West (Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming) plan to add staff; 8% plan to reduce staff.

Other regions above the national average in hiring plans: New England and West North Central (Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota), both with a net 5% projected increase

Industries most likely to hire include business services, with a projected net increase of 7%, and professional services, with a projected net increase of 6 percent.
