Hot IT Jobs: Information Security

By Ericka Chickowski on 2010-03-17

A bright spot in the global IT job market: information security. A report from the professional organization (ISC)2 shows that companies still crave workers with IT security skills, and they're willing to pay a premium to get them. For its (ISC)2 2010 Career Impact Survey, the organization polled almost 3,000 security professionals. One less-happy finding: Many security pros say the downturn has increased security risks in their organization.

52.8% of respondents reported they received salary hikes in 2009.

Less than 11% of participants suffered a pay cut last year.

Just 4.8% were laid off by their employers.

Among the 800-plus respondents with hiring responsibilities, 53.3% said they're planning to hire permanent or contract employees this year.

40% of those hiring said they'll bring in three or more new employees.

54% of all respondents believe their IT security staff will not be cut due to budget reductions or and layoffs this year.

20% expect some sort of layoffs this year--but that's down from last year, when 40 percent expected cuts.

34.2% of respondents believe the economic downturn is causing an increased security risk within their organization.

37.7% of respondents believe employee misconduct is one of the most common increasing risk factors.

55.5% of respondents said the economic downturn had decreased their security technology purchases in 2009.

30.7% of respondents believe the economy will continue to cause decreased purchasing in 2010.
