Hiring IT Freelancers Goes Online

IT job growth may be sluggish, there are some signs of a pulse in the employment market. Elance, an online marketplace for IT workers and other creative freelancers, recently conducted a poll among 500 small businesses. It found that businesses often prefer to hire contractors online as they look for greater efficiency within their organizations. Noted: Elance has an interest in promoting online hiring.

86% of respondents have hired people online in the last 12 months.

32% have hired on-site employees in the same period.

49% made between 2-5 online hires and 15% made more than 6 online hires in the last 12 months.

87% believe hiring online talent is a way to enhance competitiveness and profitability.

64% indicated they will use a hybrid model of online and traditional on-site hiring as the economy improves.

64% said they prefer the online hiring process to an on-site process.

89% of respondents said they consider feedback and ratings from other clients as an important factor in hiring an online contractor.

84% said work samples and portfolios are an important consideration.

78% named rates and project costs as a key factor.

87% say one of the top reasons they prefer hiring online contractors is due to cost-effectiveness.

82% say the flexibility of an online teleworker is their favorite characteristic.
