Will your job survive the recession? Baseline scoured employment reports and interviewed a number of IT employment and consulting professionals — among them Sean Ebner, Western regional vice president for Technisource, an IT consulting and employment outfit owned by Spherion — to find out who should be updating their resumes.

ERP DevelopersAs CIOs look to cut discretionary spending, costly ERP extensions and customizations are likely to hit the cutting room floor.

E-Commerce DevelopersOnly the most essential e-commerce projects are going forward. Foote Partners reports that the skills pay premium in this area was in the worst-performing group in the last six months.

Business Intelligence Experts in Financial SectorBI itself may be strong, but most financial organizations are in survival mode. Ebner says that BI in financial markets is “losing some of its luster because it’s so expensive to pull off.”

Operating Systems SpecialistsFoote Partners says non-certified operating systems skills saw the most pay rate decreases in the past six months compared to dozens of other recorded skillsets.

Tech-oriented Project ManagersEbner believes there’s still great demand for business-savvy PMs, but others should watch out.“The technical project manager attached to a specific project that is no longer being funded is clearly at risk,” he says

Middle ManagersThe IT management tree is likely to lose a lot of branches right now.“There's a real push to flatten IT,” Ebner says, explaining that layers of management will be scrutinized for efficiency.

System AdministratorsPeople are asking, “Do we need x amount of people to support our infrastructure or could we do it with y number of people?,” Ebner says.

Help DeskNot only are help desk crews going to be reduced, but many more continue to be outsource to companies both in and out of the country.

PC TechniciansPC techs are in the crosshairs of IT efficiency experts who are leveraging increasingly affordable automation technologies to minimize salaries.

Specialized Security ExpertsSecurity budgets may be sacrosanct right now, but that doesn’t mean that organizations aren’t looking to get the most bang for their buck. Enterprises are looking for cross-trained security workers.“Demand for very specialized security skill sets aren't that high,” Ebner says.
