As we went through the lifecycle of the implementation, we had several “aha” moments that turned into solid best practices. For example, we found that to make the project a success, it was crucial to focus on the most strategic reporting issues early in the deployment. Given the huge number of guests that visit Blue Mountain each year and the fact that hospitality and lodging represent one of our main lines of business, we decided to deploy the software in the hospitality business first.

One of the most challenging aspects of our business is pricing rooms at a level that maximizes capacity utilization and gross margin. The first deployments allowed managers in the lodging and conference room businesses to address the pricing trade-off between maximizing revenue and utilization.

Because of the success in this initial rollout, the project quickly gained credibility and momentum: Other managers more readily adopted it, and some even looked forward to the deployment so they could improve their own profitability.

Since all budgeting information is now in one place, we have a clear, consistent estimate of what’s being spent at each business level, creating a view of each department’s spending and overall performance. Blue Mountain executives get real-time revenue updates and can compare year-to-date actual values with projected revenue and previous year’s totals on a daily basis.

The software also enables our managers to review data from different angles in order to isolate the exact variables that might be slowing down sales. Our entire company now relies on this business intelligence and financial performance management solution to run business operations efficiently and profitably—crucial success factors for any company.
