Nokia Siemens Pledges 40% Power Consumption Reduction

Europe may lead the way again in cell phone technology by making the ubiquitous networks more energy efficient and environmentally friendly. Nokia Siemens Networks is committed to cutting the power consumption of its mobile base stations up to 40 percent by 2010. The telecom conglomerate plans to achieve its goal by reducing the power needs of its GSM and WCDMA base stations, as well as shutting down devices during off-peak hours. The company, created in 2005 with the merger of Finnish handset maker Nokia and German telecom equipment manufacturer Siemens, already claims its base stations consume 25 percent less electricity than their closest competitor. The company says the initiative could also result in lowering energy cost, which will help bolster its bottom line.
