Gartner Advises Businesses to Upgrade to Windows 7 In 2010

Microsoft's Windows XP should be eliminated from businesses' PCs by the end of 2012, according to a new report from research firm Gartner, as both ISVs and application builders begin to cut off support for the operating system. At the same time, the report states, organizations planning on a Windows 7 transition should begin planning and testing this year.

Windows XP should be eliminated from office PCs by the end of 2012, research firm Gartner advises in a June 2 report, as both ISVs (independent software vendors) and application-builders begin to cut off their support for the aging operating system in earnest. At the same time, Gartner advises that businesses upgrading to Windows 7 begin planning and testing for the transition this year. Gartner's advice echoes a report from before the launch of Windows 7, which has sold more than 90 million licenses since its October 2009 debut.
