Planview, maker of IT project and portfolio management software, is ready to take the wraps off a joint alliance with BMC Software.

The alliance agreement, which will be unveiled June 19 at the Gartner Project and Portfolio Management Summit in Boston, calls for both vendors to provide a series of integrations between the BMC Remedy IT Service Management Suite and Planview Enterprise. The two vendors will co-sell and co-market the integrated offerings.

Although some integration currently exists between Planview Enterprise and BMC's Remedy Service Desk product, the alliance calls for deeper integration between the two systems and further integration across other parts of the BMC Remedy ITSM suite, according to Patrick Tickle, chief marketing officer at privately held Planview, in Austin, Texas.

The integration will touch all three applications in the Planview Enterprise suite: Project and Portfolio Management, Enterprise Portfolio Management for strategic IT planning, and Service Portfolio Management for service optimization.

The plan calls for those three applications to integrate with BMC's Remedy Change Management, Service Request Management, Service Catalog and Atrium Configuration Management Database, which provide the foundation for BMC's Business Service Management initiative.

Specifically, Planview and BMC will integrate the BMB Remedy Service Desk with the central data repository in the Planview Project and Portfolio Management application.

"The ability to take time and resource planning with operational time reporting on the Remedy side will give us a more complete vision of how work is done inside IT. We want to integrate project task work into the change management flow provided by BMC," Tickle said.

After the initial work—intended to consolidate IT staff time analysis with initiative and project management—the two vendors will leverage BMC's service catalog as well as service and asset information in the Atrium CMDB to bring "true service portfolio management in our Service Portfolio Management product," said Tickle.

The initial integration is due by year's end.

Tickle said the alliance will help both vendors compete more effectively against rivals CA and Hewlett-Packard.
