BEA Leads App Server Study

Evans Data is expected to release soon a study on application servers that shows that developers chose BEA Systems’ WebLogic server as the No. 1 application server on the market.

BEA is expected to play the study result prominently at its BEAWorld conference, which runs Sept. 18-20 in San Francisco, sources said.

In the Evans study, for which the Santa Cruz, Calif., company surveyed more than 700 developers, BEA ranked No. 1 among developers, followed by IBM’s WebSphere, which placed second. Sun Microsystems came in fourth and Red Hat, with its JBoss application server, came in sixth, sources said. Oracle was seventh.

Evans is expected to release its study sometime during the week of Sept. 18, sources said.

BEA earned the top spot among application servers in another study earlier this summer. In June, Gartner released a study that showed that BEA ranked No. 1 in the application server segment based on total software revenue in 2005.

The Gartner study also showed that BEA ranked in the top three in portals, enterprise service bus and transaction processing monitor segments.
