10 Compelling Data Deduplication Tools

By Ericka Chickowski on 2008-12-16

To truly become efficient, storage managers are addressing the nagging problem of duplicated data that eats up space in the storage and backup infrastructure. Here are some of the major players in the storage arena offering some form of single-instance storage, deduplication and even records-matching to get rid of those extra bytes and make way for new data.

10 Compelling Data Deduplication Tools

NetApp

NetApp integrates its home-grown data deduplication software in all of its product lines. Most notable for IT buyers in a heterogeneous environment is the free dedupe utility in its V-Series gateway appliance, which virtualizes storage arrays from different vendors into a single manageable block.

Data Domain

Data Domain boasts the fastest inline deduplication system with its DD690, which dedupes before data is backed up or archived. The system comes either as a SAN gateway or a full array—either way it runs fast due to the two quad-core Xeon chips that power the processing.

EMC

One of the most mature dedupe backup products on the market, EMC Avamar 4.1 software deduplicates data at the source—from remote offices and dispersed systems—before sending it over the storage network. This "source-based" dedupe method speeds up backup time and improves network utilization, all while reducing the amount of space needed for backups.

WinPure

This isn’t a traditional dedupe solution, per se. But for those just looking for a way to clean up databases, contact lists and the like, WinPure Clean and Match is a standalone software suite that looks for duplicate information within files and consolidates.

Sepaton

Coupled with Sepaton’s virtual tape library hardware, Sepaton DeltaStor deduplication software sets itself apart from the crowd with its forward differencing method of weeding out identical data. Rather than keeping the first instance of a file, DeltaStor looks for the most recent copy of data in its full form.

Netrics

IT staffers in verticals such as healthcare and education often face the tall task of weeding out identical records from their data stores. Netrics specializes in records matching to help database managers and those in charge of records clean-up projects find and eliminate duplicate records.

Revinetix

The deduplication function on Revinetix’s backup appliances works at the file level, a method sometimes referred to as single-instance storage. This means that similar files still stay put—something that more advanced dedupe players address—but it is still a step above simple data compression offered by other competitors in the lower end SME backup space.

Exagrid

Exagrid EX Series is a line of SATA-based disk backup appliances that come equipped with byte-level deduplication—a method that some analysts claim delivers a higher level of accuracy and content awareness.

Quantum

Quantum offers two disk-based backup appliance lines featuring deduplication. The DXi line offers enterprise-class backup storage, and the DXi7500 in specific allows for the choice of post-processing or inline dedupe. The GoVault is a small daily backup appliance that comes with removable cartridges more reliable than tape for SMBs and remote offices.

CommVault

CommVault is another vendor that relies on single instance storage within its technology, though unlike Revinetix it delivers it through software in the form of its Simpana suite. This centralized backup and recovery management utility is vendor neutral, designed to sync with a heterogeneous storage infrastructure.
