BYOD Has Americans Working Overtime
Answering work-related phone calls and emails from home is eating into the off-hours of the average American, according to a recent survey by mobile security software vendor Good Technology. In fact, we're putting in close to 30 hours of extra work each month, the survey found. The line between work and personal time is growing increasingly fuzzy, and it's not without consequences. About half of the survey's 1,000 respondents said they have trouble switching off when not at work, and a quarter say it's caused relationship discord. More, however, say it's so routine that their significant others have no problem with it. In fact, the ability to work from everywhere may be helping employees achieve a better work/life balance. "In today's always-on mobile environment, secure access to corporate email and apps is a 'must have' versus a 'nice to have' for nearly all companies," says John Herrema, senior vice president of corporate strategy at Good Technology. "While most of our customers believe their employees work more hours as a result of this accessibility, they also appreciate and welcome the enhanced work-life balance that comes when employees have more freedom and choice to get work done whenever and wherever they need to—whether that's in the office, on the road or while sitting in the stands at a child's baseball game." OnePoll conducted the survey of 1,000 American adults on behalf of Good Technology.
